Trusses and Purlins

In this timber frame course the students will build a 16 x 20 timber frame truss building, using fully milled timbers. With a focus on layout, cutting and fitting trusses we will build a hammer beam and two king post timber trusses. There are traditional English tying joints between the tie beam and plates.

Objectives

After completing the course, the students will be able to:

​

  • Layout joinery with pencils, chalk lines, and knifes for a timber frame truss

  • Identify truss joinery in tension and joinery in compression

  • Read timber frame drawings

  • Fit a Kingpost truss and Hammer Beam Truss

  • Layout and Cut and English tying joint

  • Determine rafter length using rise and run

  • Use ratio and proportion and similar triangles to determine timber joinery angles

  • Work with heavy machinery to raise a timber frame

Prerequisites 

Students must have one of the following:

  • Experience working in the carpentry field

  • Completion of the Square Rule Timber Framing course or a similar course

  • Sound carpentry skills

August 18th - 23rd, 2025
6 Days (Monday to Saturday).
Maximum 14 students

Location: Perth, Ontario

Cost: $1350+hst

Payment Policy
  • The deposits are non-refundable.

  • If a cancellation is required more than 6 weeks in advance of the course, the deposit can be deferred for 2 years towards another course. If a cancellation is required within 6 weeks of the course date the deposit is forfeited.

  • Final payment is due 2 weeks in advance of the course. If a cancellation happens within 2 weeks of the course, 50% of the total tuition costs will be refunded.
