Square Rule Layout

This course is a six-day timber framing course where you will learn the basics of timber frame construction. With hands-on learning you will gain the knowledge to build your own timber frame project. This course focuses on laying out and cutting the traditional joinery developed in the early 1800s in North America. You will also learn shop safety, proper tool use, sharpening skills, square rule layout and raising techniques.

Objectives

We will build a 16' x 20' shed. Each student will learn how to layout and cut each piece of the frame. This includes tie beams, posts, knee braces, rafter plates and rafters. We will raise the frame together on the sixth day.

After completing the course, the students will be able to:

​

  • Work from a set of timber frame drawings

  • Identify the timber parts of a traditional timber frame building

  • Timber Storage and Protection

  • Layout and Cut a timber frame tenon

  • Layout and cut a timber frame mortice

  • Layout and cut a knee brace

  • Layout and cut a rafter

  • Layout a traditional timber frame rafter bird's mouth cut

  • Draw Dowel

  • Apply square rule layout on rough-sawn timber to create a perfectly dimensioned building

  • Work with the imperial system and convert Decimals to Fractions

Our one-week courses provide an authentic timber framing experience, offering an in-depth understanding of the craft while fostering a sense of accomplishment. In addition to group workshops, Jason also offers private training programs tailored to your unique needs, whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or a professional builder.

If you would like to enroll, please send a non-refundable $300 deposit to info@timberschoolcanada.com with the dates you would like to attend.

Payment Policy
  • The deposits are non-refundable.

  • If a cancellation is required more than 6 weeks in advance of the course, the deposit can be deferred for 2 years towards another course. If a cancellation is required within 6 weeks of the course date the deposit is forfeited.

  • Final payment is due 2 weeks in advance of the course. If a cancellation happens within 2 weeks of the course, 50% of the total tuition costs will be refunded.
